Rich Diets Full of Antioxidants Fight Disease 0

Posted on September 05, 2009 by Dr. Jerimiah Crossderd

A study done by scientist for the USDA to determine foods that contained the highest level of antioxidants found that the acai berry, artichokes, and beans had the highest levels recorded.

It was also confirmed that already well-known high antioxidant foods such as cranberries and blueberries–the researchers also found that Russet potatoes, pecans and even cinnamon are all excellent–although lesser-known, sources of antioxidants. Antioxidants are thought to fight cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s.

“The bottom line is the same–eat more fruits and veggies,” says Ronald L. Prior, Ph.D., a chemist and nutritionist with the USDA’s Arkansas Children’s Nutrition Center in Little Rock, Ark., and lead author of the study. “This study confirms that those foods are full of benefits, particularly those with higher levels of antioxidants. Nuts and spices are also good sources.”

Thanks to updated technology, this study done by the USDA is the most comprehensive and accurate ever done concerning antioxidants research. They analyzed over 100 foods like the acai berry, fruits, vegetables, spices, and nuts.

All foods were measured based off of antioxidant concentration and antioxidant capacity per serving. Russet potatoes, artichokes and beans were the best source of antioxidants in the vegetable category. Acai berries, cranberries, and blueberries were tops for antioxidants in the fruit category–while pecans, walnuts, and hazelnuts were your best source of antioxidants in the nut family.

Spices usually are eaten in small amounts, even though many have been found to contain high levels of amino acids. Ground cinnamon, ground cloves, and ground oregano were found to have high levels of antioxidant concentration.

This study should prove helpful for people who are looking to add antioxidants to their diet. Please note that the total capacity of antioxidants found in foods does not indicate necessarily the potential health benefit–this depends on how the food is absorbed by the body.

The government currently has no guidelines for how people should consume antioxidants as part of their daily diet–this is the same dilemma with vitamins and minerals. One big problem is the lack of continuity amongst researchers.

USDA officials consistently to encourage people to eat a variety of fruits like the acai berry and vegetables like potatoes for better health.

For the past 30 years, Dr. Jerimiah Crossderd has studied the benefits that antioxidants have on the body. He currently has an acai fruit web site that is full of with an abundance of information on the high concentration of antioxidants found in acai fruit. He also has a acai fruit review site of thew best acai fruit products to buy.

Arguments For The Atkins Diet 0

Many arguments on the internet also exist, which state that the Atkins diet is a viable diet and should be allowed to be tried by more people in order for them to receive the benefits of this great fat burning diet. There seem to be effects that lean towards being positive or negative in different experiences, and is some cases a person will have positive and negative effects that both affect them equally.

However, not all of these arguments are positive and they require further examination. Despite this, the fact still remains the Atkins has proffered forth some valuable services within its diet that does make the user lose weight. To the average person, losing weight would be a boon that he or she could not pass up, and with this diet, nothing is different.

Many people feel that their weight is more important then their health, this can be very hard on them and can mean that they without realizing it could hurt their body. Dr. Robert Atkins created this diet for himself so that he would be able to lose weight and this diet was so successful for himself that he let others try and in turn, it was successful for them in many cases. There have not been a lot of research conducted that had to do with the long term effects of the Atkins diet, but some individuals have proven that for them it was a very hard diet and left them with negative effects that outnumbered the positive gain.

The Atkins diet can also save individuals money as it lessens the amounts and types of food you need to get, thus reducing cost and increasing accessibility. Saving money in an economy that is as in trouble as ours is a must. In addition, with costs skyrocketing, it is far too easy to eat unhealthy foods due to the price change. However, the diet will provide a limited selection of foods to choose from (typically focusing on meat) which will minimize the amount of food needing to be purchased and consumed. This is also beneficial for those who wish to use part of their money for groceries around the house.

Following the Atkins diet allows each person to start setting goals for his or her health while using the guidelines of the diet. The recipes that are offered are very appealing to many people, and after being carbohydrate free the return trip to a healthy balanced diet can be very enjoyable.

It can be a great plan when used properly with supplements and a healthy exercise program. But while there are many arguments for the Atkins diet, each individual will have to decide if they wish to try it and then decide the results for his or herself.

Do Negative Calorie Foods Work? What Are Negative Calorie Foods? 0

The negative calorie foods diet is an eating plan that has come under a lot of fire and a lot of scrutiny. Considered very controversial, it’s sometimes hard to figure out what points are actually true and which are just smoke. The arguments make it even more confusing as it becomes obvious that there are many very different understandings as to what this diet is about and how it should (or should not) be followed.

There are many dangerous fad diets out there, and it’s a good thing to be cautious and protective to make sure that you’re not undertaking a diet that is going to ruin your health. Negative calorie foods are considered by many to be a fad, and even the name causes a lot of confusion. So are negative calorie foods a fad diet or a dangerous myth?

This question has answers from both sides – which is why the argument over this diet plan continues on unabated. It’s true that there’s no such thing as a “negative calorie,” but this is a straw man argument because the negative calorie foods diet never says that there is. The way this diet plan made its name is because it argues that some foods take more calories for the human body to digest and metabolize than the foods themselves give. So if an apple takes 120 calories to digest, but only has 110 calories, than there’s a deficit of -10. That’s where the argument comes in for negative calorie foods.

This claim has been argued, as well, but in the end the question is will people lose weight if they eat a lot of negative calorie foods? The answer is yes. All of these foods are either fruits or vegetables, most of which have a very high water content and most of which are also very high in fiber, as well. This helps to keep the dieter full while minimizing the calories that are there to be burned.

Even if negative calorie foods don’t create a true caloric deficit, eating a lot of healthy foods high in water and fiber will definitely help the far majority of dieters lose weight.

What You Should Consider Before Getting Weight Loss Surgery 0

Weight loss surgery is a surgical procedure that helps patients to lose weight.

This procedure, performed in an operating room causes the digestive system to be restructured in such a way as to cause weight loss. The size of the stomach is greatly reduced through banding or stapling so that it holds a much smaller volume of food.

This smaller volume causes only a few nibbles of food at one time to fill a patient. Less food consumed means that there are fewer calories consumed. This results in weight loss. At times the weight loss is very dramatic.

Some of the surgeries also include the restructuring of the large intestine. This restructuring lowers the calories actually absorbed into the system. Patients with this option will lose weight at an even faster rate.

This procedure is usually reserved for patients who are morbidly obese. That means that over thirty percent of their body weight is fat. In practical terms, the person must be at least one hundred pounds over their ideal weight.

Weight loss surgery can lead to complications. Some of the complications are serious enough that they can lead to death. Reported complications include blood clots, excessive blood loss and anesthesia problems.

After the surgery there are also some serious side effects that should be considered. Some patients have hair loss as a result of the surgery. Others have problems getting all the necessary nutrients. In particular, patients report problems with anemia. Anemia presents a whole new set of problems that have to be dealt with. Patients should be sure to take iron and B-12 supplements as prescribed by their physician.

Before having this surgery, there are some procedures that should be done. Since it will no longer be possible to do a proper upper GI series after the surgery, many surgeons order this test prior to the surgery.

When large amounts of weight are lost, patients have trouble with hanging skin. This skin sometimes has to be removed by a second surgery. This surgery also has risks associated with it.

The advantages to this surgery are of course the weight loss. However weight related problems may also be diminished. Patients may find that they no longer have back problems or no longer need to take medication to control type 2 diabetes.

The decision to have weight loss surgery is a serious one and should not be taken lightly.
